What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
PBIS is a school-wide approach to discipline and a process for creating safe and more effective schools. PBIS is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, schoolwide and classroom discipline systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for ALL students. With PBIS, instructional time is more effectively used for teaching and the overall school environment is calm and conducive to learning!

Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe, and Be a learner
Be responsible, be respectful, be safe and be a learner are the school wide expectations inside and outside of our building here at Yahara. We feel that these expectations create a positive and successful school community. Throughout the year we review what these expectations look like throughout the building in different environments and activities in our school day, and do extended learning around what it means to be responsible, respectful, safe and a learner. When students are following the Yahara Way, all students are able to engage in and be a part of a safe and successful learning environment. We encourage you to also have conversations at home about these expectations, and further student learning and connections. Thank you for your continued support, it is going to be a wonderful year here at Yahara!
We're All in This Together
We are thankful to be a partnership with you in your child’s education! Together we can help all students succeed each and every day!
Here are some ways you can help your child stay on the path of positive behavior this school year:
- Review and discuss our school expectations often with your child at home
- Ensure your child is ready for each school day, including a good night’s sleep
- Ask your student to name a positive thing that happened at school
- Provide a quiet time and space for your child to read
- Stay in regular communication with your child’s teacher about their academic, social and emotional progress
- Encourage your child to use appropriate tone and language including positive phrases such as: please, thank you, you’re welcome, I’m sorry, and excuse me
- Be an engaged and visible part of your child’s school success at Yahara!
Our goal at Yahara is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment which values, recognizes, and affirms the worth of each individual in our learning community. To help us reach our goal, we use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS), a research based systems approach designed to enhance the capacity of schools to effectively educate all students. Involvement in PBIS helps promote social, emotional, and academic success. PBIS is based on a multi-tiered system of support, which means that schools provide different levels of support depending on students’ needs.
- Tier 1 is universal and provided to all students. All students receive this.
- Tier 2 and 3 provides more targeted support. Some students receive this.
As part of our Positive Behavior Support program, we may be implementing a daily check-in/check- out (CICO) Tier 2 intervention. CICO is designed to build a positive relationship between students and adults at the school, while focusing on schoolwide expectations taught at PBIS Tier 1 (Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful). This is a program designed to help students meet our school-wide expectations in a positive manner. If your student participates in this, they will be assigned a greeter who will be responsible for checking-in with your student each morning and check-out again at the end of the day. As a parent/guardian, you will be notified if your student enters a Tier 2 behavior intervention.
